Rise of The Vessel Sink

| Vessel Sink Vessel Sinks: We’ve come a long way since the days before indoor plumbing, when we washed up at basins full of water. Or have we? The recent Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Chicago featured more basins now known as vessel sinks than traditional porcelain or cast-iron sinks. Vessels are the stuff of which high-end design is made. Though they account for only about 20 percent of the bathroom sink market, they are being produced in an ever-increasing array of styles, shapes and materials. “There are two sides to vessels _ an artistic side and a practical side,” said Gray Uhl, director of design for American Standard, the fixtures manufacturer. “Instead of matched and coordinated fixtures, you have a collection _ for example, a Mozambique wood stand on which sits a work of art.” The price of art is high. Vitraform introduced the Cubetto, a mouth-blown crystal pedestal with a crystal laminated-glass basin and countertop. Price: $9,800. It was shown with a Dornbracht MEM wall-mount faucet that retails for close to $1,000. That’s not saying that you can’t find a vessel sink for a few hundred dollars. They range in price from mass-produced models starting at $200 to custom-designed vessels that can cost $5,000 or more.:Bathroom Sink |
